THE BEST WAY TO GLUE DOWELS
When doweling pieces together, sand a small flat on one side of each dowel before inserting them. This allows any excess glue to escape when you clamp the joint. If you don’t let the glue escape, the pressure could force the joint open again.

Old Masking Tape
Masking tape gets old in the shop and after a while it won’t unroll very well. This is especially true in cold weather. As a remedy, I give a troublesome roll a 10 to 15 second zap in the microwave.

Color to Dye For
Instead of buying expensive pre-mixed stains to color your projects, try using Rit dye instead. This water-based dye is available in the laundry section of most grocery stores. It comes in a variety of colors, which can be mixed to suite your project. Experiment with a piece of scrap until you get the color and intensity you desire.
